ARTIST STATEMENT
My current work includes paintings and installations. I enjoy working with many different mediums, acrylics, raw pigments, pastels, charcoal, oil, even the canvas and frame.
I am inspired by the patterns and contrasts in nature and culture. I am interested representing these with distinct delineation of threshold, division, undercurrents and rhythm. I am fascinated by the undercurrent of rhythm and pattern that forms the structure from which meaning arises. Great artists of the past that inspire me are Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Clifford Still.
I work mostly on/with canvas. Much of my work starts in a sketchbook or plein-air painting. I then transform this into the final piece. I use tapping-off of areas to create crisp delineation between patterns to separate layers from each other. Currently I am taking mark making to an extreme, by sewing the marks into the canvas, which has led me to create works as a three-dimensional form.
